'Dream of Jessica' is easily the strongest work yet in the painting medium from an artist who is less developed here than she is in sculpture and photography. Thus it represents a unique chance to view her learning process in a less polished or expert domain. Naturally, under these conditions, this piece has both very potent and very confused elements...mixed together very closely.

On the one hand, the central figure 'Jessica' (presumably) in white has excellent line and shade and the posture of the figure is very expressive of the theme of a Dreamer in full involvement with her subconscious world. There is also a good balancing element of this formal component in the white flower which draws the eye outward and offers repetition and reinforcement.

An equally important aspect is the general color gradient of the background sky element. This is very well executed and the orange-red works very well in contrast to the green of the plants. Its unusual color gives an enhanced Surreality, almost as if the tableau occurs in some strange location...maybe the surface of Mars.

However, some elements do not work as well. The Pixies with dragonfly wings seem almost like derivative cartoons of themselves, possessing none of the formal care lavished on the other figures. Equally problematic are the floating leaves, which might be stronger in fall colors, but the narrative here as to why they are included and where they came from is less clear. Can the Artist provide us with more of a clue for how to view these components?

All in all this is a very exciting effort from an Artist with a strong vision. The less cliche the components the stronger the execution...and this means that as more pieces of this type are attempted, we will likely see even more ambitious and successful forms. The key here seems to be avoiding quotes of previously seen characters that are not at the same level as the more potent elements of the main design!
